How fares work on MRT Line 6
DMTCL uses a distance-based zone fare system: ৳20 minimum (1–2 stations) up to ৳100 maximum for the full Uttara North ↔ Motijheel route. The rate is ৳5 per kilometer rounded to the nearest zone. You can pay in two ways: a Single Journey Ticket (SJT) bought for a specific trip, or a rechargeable MRT Pass which gives you a 10% discount on every journey.
Children under 5 travel free when accompanied by an adult. There is currently no separate concession card for students or seniors on MRT Line 6, but a 10% discount applies to all MRT Pass and Rapid Pass holders regardless of age.
Single Journey Ticket — fare table
Single Journey Tickets are QR-coded paper tokens valid for one trip on the day of purchase. Buy them at any station’s ticket vending machine or counter.

MRT Pass
The MRT Pass is a contactless NFC smart card launched by DMTCL on 29 December 2022 (the same day MRT Line 6 opened). It is the most convenient way to use the Dhaka metro: tap in at the gate, tap out, and the correct distance-based fare is deducted automatically — with a built-in 10% discount on every journey.
When you buy the card (৳500) you get ৳300 of preloaded travel credit and ৳200 covers the card itself. The card is valid for 10 years and can hold up to ৳10,000 in stored value. Minimum recharge is ৳100, in any multiple of ৳10.
No personal registration is strictly required for an anonymous MRT Pass, but if you register it with photo ID at the customer service counter, the balance can be recovered if the card is lost or damaged.

MRT Pass balance tracker
DMTCL does not currently publish a public API for live MRT Pass balance lookup — your real-time balance is shown only at station ticket vending machines and customer service counters. To help in the meantime, this tool lets you track your balance privately in your browser: enter what was on your card last time you used it, simulate a trip, and see what remains. Everything is stored locally on your device — nothing is sent to us.

How to obtain your MRT Pass
Go to any MRT Line 6 station
Customer service counters are at the concourse level of every station, signposted "MRT Pass / Customer Service".
Bring photo ID (optional)
For an anonymous card no ID is needed. For a registered card (recommended — protects your balance if lost), bring your National ID or passport.
Pay ৳500
৳200 covers the card itself and ৳300 is loaded as travel credit so you can start using it immediately. Cash or mobile banking accepted.
Tap & ride
Touch the card to the gate reader at entry and again at exit. The fare is deducted automatically with a 10% discount.
How to recharge
There are three official ways to top up your MRT Pass:
- Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) at every MRT Line 6 station — touchscreen interface in Bengali and English, accepts ৳100, ৳500 and ৳1000 banknotes. Minimum recharge: ৳100. Maximum balance: ৳10,000.
- Customer Service Counter — give the attendant your card plus cash, they recharge it on the spot and print a receipt.
- Mobile banking (bKash, Nagad, Rocket, Upay) — supported at TVMs by scanning the QR shown on screen. No separate DMTCL app required.
A new balance shows on the TVM screen immediately after recharge. We will post here right away if DMTCL adds a remote-recharge option.
Rapid Pass — the multi-modal alternative
The Rapid Pass is a smart card issued by Bangladesh Bank for use across multiple public transport systems: MRT Line 6, BRTC buses, Bangladesh Bus Rapid Transit (when operational) and selected Dhaka Wasa services. It is accepted by the same gates as the MRT Pass and offers the same 10% discount on MRT fares.
If you regularly use Dhaka buses in addition to the metro, the Rapid Pass is a better one-card solution. Issuance details, deposit and recharge follow the same pattern as the MRT Pass — available at customer service counters of partner banks and select transit hubs. We update this page when more issuance points open.

Who travels free or cheaper
War-wounded Heroic Freedom Fighters travel free on a single journey. Show the identity card issued by the appropriate authority at the Ticket Office (TOM) and you are given a free Single Journey Ticket.
Children under three feet tall travel free with their guardian.
Passengers aged 65 or over and passengers with disabilities pay 25% less. This is the discounted fare table DMTCL signed on 25 May 2026; those tickets have to be bought at the ticket office, not from a machine, and the fare is rounded to the nearest ৳5. The earlier Fare Collection Guidelines set 15% for passengers with special needs holding a Department of Social Services card — the 2026 table is the newer figure.
What a Single Journey Ticket actually is
It is valid until midnight on the day you buy it — not open-ended. If you do not use it, you can return it to the Ticket Office the same day, during office hours, and get your money back.
Single Journey Tickets are sold at the ticket vending machines (TVM) and the ticket office (TOM).
The banknote trap at the ticket machines
The machines take ৳10, ৳20, ৳50, ৳100, ৳200, ৳500 and ৳1,000 notes — but if your fare is under ৳100 the machine will not accept a ৳500 or ৳1,000 note. Most journeys on this line cost ৳20–৳80, so arrive with small notes or you will be queuing at the ticket office instead.
MRT Pass: what it costs to lose one
A refund gives you the security deposit and the unused balance back, minus a ৳50 service charge.
Re-issuing a damaged pass costs ৳200 in processing. Re-issuing a lost one costs ৳400 — ৳200 security deposit plus ৳200 processing. Your unused balance transfers to the new card automatically. If the lost pass turns up later and still works, you get the deposit back for ৳50.
Top up at a ticket vending machine, the ticket office or the Excess Fare Office (EFO). If the card stops reading at the gates, or gets blocked after an irregular journey, the EFO is where it is unblocked.
You cannot linger: 40 minutes inside the gates
Once you touch in, there is a time limit on staying in the paid area. From Uttara North to Agargaon the allowance including travel is 40 minutes. Overstay it and you pay double the maximum fare for that section.
